The History of Ubud

Entitled as a prominent location in Bali where traditional craft and authentic Balinese culture is strongly upheld—Ubud has full of enigmatic mystical beliefs while also uncovering its beauty where nature and comfort unify. This incorporation did not occur as a mere way to proclaim, yet its historical background has some telltale myth and anecdote as an embodiment of a time-honored story of Ubud.

Petanu and petanen are philosophy that comprises Ubud where was once a rural of Bali, referred to Balinese writer—Laurensius I Ketut Supriyanto. Petanu is a river settled since the prehistory that drains water flow between Ayung and Pakerisan that also brought together pura Dharma (Dama) Keling. In order to store and drain river water, the dam was constructed around Kendran. As the water flows down the southeast valley and incorporate with other water flows, along with the ends meet occurred—this later called as Petanu. Consider as mystical river, Petanu was the place of Mayadenawa—a ruthless King to build his house.

 

At the northern end of Petulu Vilage, cited a water tunnel that was built in the last century which later reconstruct in 1978 as a water channel for Tengkulak area (Tengkulak Mawang Irrigation Dam). Located behind the modern of Zen Ubud Villa, the silent dam later titled as Petanen. In Javanese, Petanen means as a room located in central of the house—mystically known as silent meditation room of Keraton Solo and Jogja where brings virility to the very night of a King and her wife—Dewi Sri.   

There was once a belief that Petanu and Petanen water might not allow to flow and irrigate rice field, however if they made their way—the field might produce rotten and blood-soaked fruits. The myth remained debatable up until thousand years later. These telltale mythical stories of Petanu and Petanen are veritably to remind next generations in order not to forget the legendary folklore of Ubud, also as an advice to preserve and improve natural resources throughout Ubud area.
